• Answer all questions. Use the mark allocation as a guide to how much to write.

Question 1 CALCULATE (2 marks)

A current of 0.40 A flows through a lamp for 30 s. Calculate the charge that flows through the lamp. Use the equation: charge flow = current × time

(Total for Question 1 = 2 marks)

Question 2 DRAW (4 marks)

Draw a circuit diagram to show a cell, a switch and a lamp connected in series, with an ammeter to measure the current through the lamp and a voltmeter to measure the potential difference across the lamp. Use the correct circuit symbols.

(Total for Question 2 = 4 marks)

Question 3 CALCULATE (3 marks)

180 C of charge flows through a heater in 1.0 minute. Calculate the current in the heater.

(Total for Question 3 = 3 marks)

Question 4 EXPLAIN (2 marks)

In a series circuit, ammeter A1 reads 0.50 A. A second ammeter, A2, is on the other side of a lamp. What does A2 read? Explain your answer.

(Total for Question 4 = 2 marks)

Question 5 CALCULATE (3 marks)

A charge of 12 C flows through a resistor when the current is 0.50 A. Calculate the time for which the current flows.

(Total for Question 5 = 3 marks)

TOTAL FOR PAPER = 14 MARKS

Answers and mark scheme

Check your answer only once you have written one.

Question 1 (2 marks)

Q = 0.40 × 30 = 12 C

• Correct substitution 1 mark

• 12 C 1 mark

Question 2 (4 marks)

A single closed loop containing a cell, a switch, a lamp and an ammeter, with a voltmeter connected in parallel across the lamp only.

• Cell, switch and lamp in a closed series loop 1 mark

• Ammeter in series 1 mark

• Voltmeter in parallel with the lamp 1 mark

• All symbols correct 1 mark

Question 3 (3 marks)

t = 60 s; I = Q ÷ t = 180 ÷ 60 = 3.0 A

• Converts 1.0 minute to 60 s 1 mark

• Correct substitution 1 mark

• 3.0 A 1 mark

Question 4 (2 marks)

0.50 A. The current has the same value at every point in a single closed loop; the lamp does not use up the current.

• 0.50 A 1 mark

• Current is the same at every point in a series loop 1 mark

Question 5 (3 marks)

t = Q ÷ I = 12 ÷ 0.50 = 24 s

• Rearranges to t = Q ÷ I 1 mark

• Correct substitution 1 mark

• 24 s 1 mark
