Key terms in this chapter

All 48, gathered from every lesson.

Face
A flat surface of a solid.
Edge
A line where two faces meet.
Vertex
A corner where edges meet (plural: vertices).
Plan
The view of a solid from above.
Elevation
The view of a solid from the front or side.
Prism
A solid with the same cross-section all the way through.
Object
The original shape before a transformation.
Image
The shape after a transformation.
Congruent
The same shape and size, possibly turned or flipped.
Mirror line
The line a shape is reflected in.
Centre of rotation
The fixed point a shape turns about.
Clockwise
The direction the hands of a clock move.
Enlargement
A transformation that changes the size of a shape by a scale factor.
Scale factor
The number every length is multiplied by.
Centre of enlargement
The fixed point the enlargement is measured from.
Similar
The same shape but a different size.
Ray
A straight line drawn from the centre through a vertex.
Congruent
The same shape and size.
Translation
A slide of every point by the same vector.
Column vector
A pair of numbers, one above the other, giving a move right and up.
Combination
Two or more transformations done one after the other.
Single transformation
One transformation that does the same job as a combination.
Invariant point
A point that does not move under a transformation.
Image
The shape after a transformation.
Bearing
An angle measured clockwise from north, written with three figures.
Scale
The ratio of a length on a drawing to the real length.
Back bearing
The bearing of A from B when you know the bearing of B from A.
Clockwise
The direction the hands of a clock turn.
Three-figure bearing
A bearing written with hundreds, tens and units, such as 045°.
Compass point
One of N, E, S, W and their combinations.
Construct
Draw accurately using only a ruler and compasses (a protractor when an angle is given).
Compasses
An instrument for drawing arcs and circles.
Arc
Part of the circumference of a circle.
Bisect
To cut exactly in half.
Perpendicular bisector
A line at \(90^\circ\) through the midpoint of a segment.
Vertex
A corner of a shape.
Angle bisector
A line that cuts an angle exactly in half.
Perpendicular
At \(90^\circ\) to a line.
Arc
Part of a circle's circumference.
Equidistant
The same distance from two things.
Construction lines
The arcs and lines you leave to show your method.
Vertex
The point where the arms of an angle meet.
Locus
A set of points that all obey a rule.
Loci
More than one locus.
Equidistant
The same distance from two points or lines.
Region
An area of the plane described by one or more rules.
Perpendicular bisector
The locus of points equidistant from two points.
Angle bisector
The locus of points equidistant from two lines.
